SNAP Challenge
building awareness of hunger and food insecurity
During Lent this year, the Go Team challenges us to subsist on the equivalent funds that low-income families receive from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The purpose of this challenge is to raise awareness of hunger and food insecurity that low-income families in our community experience by simulating what it is like to rely on a limited food budget.
In New Jersey, the average federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit is about $6.64 per person per day.
Take the Challenge
The SNAP Challenge is to subsist on $40 per person in your household for six days, from Sunday, March 16 through Friday, March 21. No hot or prepared foods are eligible with SNAP funds. You are encouraged to donate funds saved on groceries to our mission partner Feeding Hands, which is committed to making the world a better place one cart of groceries at a time.
After completing the challenge, we will gather for brunch in the Havrilla Room on Saturday, March 22 from 9:30-11 am, and share our experience with each other.
